Course Overview
Trauma touches every aspect of the human experience, leaving lasting effects on the brain, body, and spirit. This course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to recognize, respond to, and support individuals affected by trauma. Learners will explore the science of trauma and how adverse experiences shape health and behavior. Trauma-informed care uniquely focuses on creating safe, compassionate environments that promote healing and empowerment. Topics include the principles of advocacy, cultural considerations, and addressing secondary trauma in professionals. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define trauma, trauma-informed care, and resilience.
  • Recall the epidemiology and risk factors that correlate with trauma.
  • Describe the effects of trauma on physical and mental health.
  • Apply the principles of trauma-informed care in patient interactions.
  • Identify the signs of trauma and respond empathetically.
  • Implement strategies to create a trauma-sensitive healthcare environment.
  • Identify and manage secondary trauma in themselves and their teams.

About the Author/Presenter 
Abbie Schmitt, MSN-Ed, RN is a nurse educator with nursing experience in internal medicine, inpatient rehab, cardiology, emergency medicine, humanitarian relief, and ADN nursing programs. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) in 2007, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2012, and a Master’s Degree in Nursing-Nursing Education (MSN-Ed) from Liberty University in 2019.
