Tennessee Social Worker Continuing Education Requirements And License Renewal

Hours Required per calendar year:

• L.B.S.W. - 9 hours each calendar year, 18 hours per renewal cycle 
• L.M.S.W. - 12 hours each calendar year, 24 hours per renewal cycle
• L.A.P.S.W. & L.C.S.W. - 15 hours each calendar year, 30 hours per renewal cycle

Mandatory Subjects for all licensees:
6 hours of Ethics 
1 hour specific to Tennessee Code Annotated §§ 63-23-101, et seq., and the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure  
2 hours of Suicide Prevention (once every 4 years)

Additional Information for Suicide Prevention Training:
Beginning January 1, 2020, each of the following professionals certified or licensed under this title or title 68 shall, at least once every four (4) years, complete a training program that is approved by rule by the respective boards:

• A social worker licensed under chapter 23 of this title;
• A marriage and family therapist, professional counselor, or pastoral counselor certified or licensed under chapter 22 of this title;
• An alcohol and drug abuse counselor certified under title 68, chapter 24; and
• An occupational therapist licensed under chapter 13 of this title.

The hours spent completing the training program under this section count toward meeting any applicable continuing education requirements for each profession.
