Course Overview

This course provides dental professionals with a comprehensive overview of dental ethics and professionalism, focusing on the challenges introduced by the digital age. Participants will delve into the historical roots of dental ethics and examine the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Topics include the ethical use of artificial intelligence, teledentistry, social media, and more. The course also explores the intersection of law and ethics through a case-based approach, equipping dentists, hygienists, and assistants with practical strategies for navigating complex ethical scenarios. By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of the ethical issues facing modern dentistry and the tools needed to address them with confidence and integrity. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the evolution of healthcare ethics, including events that affected the development of the principles of ethics that guide the dental profession.
  • Describe how codes of ethics and concepts of professionalism guide the dental practitioner’s relationships and obligations.
  • Discuss the relationship between ethics and the law.  
  • Identify emerging ethical challenges dental professionals face in the digital age. 


About the Author/Presenter 
Toni M. Roucka, RN, DDS, MA, is Professor Emerita at Marquette University School of Dentistry. She is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and on the board of the American Society for Dental Ethics and the American College of Dentists as an At Large Regent. Dr. Roucka obtained her DDS degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry and her master’s degree in population health – bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
