Kentucky RN continuing education requirements at a glance*:

Next license renewal deadline: October 31, 2024

• RNs are required to earn fourteen (14) contact hours of continuing education from an approved provider of CE each year for licensure renewal.
• One-time requirements (These hours may count as part of the required 14 contact hours of CE needed for licensure renewal and must be completed one time within the first 3 years of licensure):
  • Suicide Prevention – minimum of two (2) contact hours within 3 years of initial licensure if you did not complete a KY Nursing Program after 08/2023.
  • Domestic Violence – three (3) contact hours.
  • Pediatric Abuse Head Trauma (shaken baby syndrome) – one-and-a-half (1.5) contact hours within 3 years of initial licensure if you did not complete a KY Nursing Program after 12/2011.
  • For nurses who hold a SANE credential, five (5) contact hours related to Forensic medicine or domestic violence are required every earning period. These hours may count as part of the required 14 contact hours of CE needed for licensure renewal.

Kentucky APRN continuing education requirements at a glance*:

• APRNs may use their board certification to satisfy the fourteen (14) contact hours needed for RN license renewal, as long as the certification was initially attained during the licensure period, has been in effect during the entire licensure period, or has been renewed during the licensure period.
• NEW! DEA MATE ACT:
  Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
• One-time requirements (These hours may count as part of the required 14 contact hours of CE needed for licensure renewal and must be completed one time within the first 3 years of licensure):
  • Suicide Prevention – minimum of two (2) contact hours within 3 years of initial licensure if you did not complete a KY Nursing Program after 08/2023.

• APRNs with a CAPA-CS – One-and-a-half (1.5) contact hours on the use of KASPER, pain management, or addiction disorders. These hours may count as part of the required 5 CE contact hours needed in pharmacology for APRN licensure renewal.
