Important news regarding CE hours for Florida cosmetologists
The DBPR has issued some slight changes in the CE requirements for a segment of licensees this renewal cycle. Here’s a quick summary of who’s affected.
- Licensed for less than ten (10) years or Other Issue: Your CE requirements haven’t changed. You’ll still need to complete all 10 hours by October 31, 2024.
- Licensed for ten (10) or more years WITH disciplinary action: Your CE requirements haven’t changed. You’ll still need to complete all 10 hours by October 31, 2024.
- Licensed for ten (10) or more years without disciplinary action: Congratulations on being continually licensed for over 10 years with no disciplinary action! You may be impacted by the new CE regulations. While you may no longer need to take CE to maintain your license, it’s important to stay sharp. Renewal requirements for Florida cosmetology licenses
Cosmetologists in Florida renew every two years in one of two cohorts: Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 expires on October 31 of the odd year. Group 2 expires on October 31 of the even year. In 2024, all Group 2 Florida Cosmetology licensees will need to renew their licenses on October 31, 2024.
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) will send Group 2 licensees a notification 90-120 days before the expiration date, letting you know the renewal period is open. Before midnight EST on October 31, 2024, all Group 2 licensees will need to complete the following requirements to renew:
- Complete the continuing education requirement
- Pay the renewal fee
What are the continuing education requirements for Florida cosmetology license renewal?
The DBPR requires cosmetologists licensed in Florida to complete 10 hours of CE in the following topics every two years:
- Minimum of one (1) hour HIV/AIDS
- Three (3) hours of sanitation and sterilization
- One-half (.5) hour OSHA
- One-half (.5) hour workers’ compensation
- Two (2) hours of laws and rules
- One (1) hours of chemical makeup
- One (1) hour of environmental issues
- One (1) hour in any subject related to the practice of cosmetology
