Nurses invited to transformative NIH sessions
Officials with the National Institute of Nursing Research are seeking nurses to participate in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Common Fund’s Transformative Health Disparities Research Community Listening Sessions Series.
Nurses are encouraged to share their perspectives on opportunities, challenges, and community needs related to interventions targeting social determinant factors that influence health disparities, including education, healthcare, financial resources, neighborhood environments, and social context.
The listening sessions series will bring together members from various stakeholder groups. Community-based organizations, tribal communities, faith-based organizations, advocacy organizations, professional societies, foundations, colleges, and universities will help identify new solutions and inform the development of interventions to address health disparities and advance health equity.
The series is hosted by the NIH Common Fund’s Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity Initiative working group. To register, visit the National Institute of Nursing Research.
AANP salutes nursing program for COVID volunteer efforts
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is recognizing the University of South Carolina’s College of Nursing faculty and students for the thousands of volunteer hours they have spent administering COVID-19 vaccines to residents in their state.
April N. Kapu, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FCCM, FAAN, president of the AANP, presented an AANP certificate of recognition to the college’s nursing leaders and students recently.
“University of South Carolina nursing students and faculty have volunteered nearly 7,000 hours of service to vaccinate South Carolinians at COVID-19 mass vaccination clinics across the state,” said Dr. Kapu, in a prepared statement. “Their commitment, compassion and courage in the face of an unprecedented public health crisis reflect the true spirit of nursing and of the NP profession. We cannot thank them enough for their life-saving assistance to patients, and we want them to know how proud they have made our nation’s NPs. These students, and faculty mentors, represent the very best of nursing and of the NP profession. Their dedication during a public health crisis gives me every confidence in the future of healthcare and the nursing profession.”
At the start of the college’s semester in January 2021, an effort to support statewide vaccinations was launched. Based on an overwhelming demand for vaccinations, 670 nursing students and 66 faculty members were available to deliver vaccines at nine vaccination sites.

ICN to launch partnership for better nursing associations in Africa
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has announced a new partnership that is expected to create stronger and more sustainable nursing associations in Africa for improved healthcare delivery and prevention measures.
The Organizational Development of National Nursing Associations (ODENNA) will reportedly be supported by the Johnson & Johnson Foundation and aim to pave the way for a global scale-up of the concept.
According to the ICN, the ODENNA partnership will bring together the National Nurses Associations and Nursing Now groups in Africa with the goal of improving protection, support, and advocacy for nurses.
Phase 1 of the partnership will include the training of faculty and facilitators who will eventually run educational activities in participating countries. Phase 2 will see the implementation of the ICN Organizational Assessment Tool and the development of plans to address areas identified for improvement. Phase 3 will involve the establishment of a Leadership For Change program.
