What do I need to renew my LPN license in Michigan?  

Michigan LPNs must earn 25 hours of continuing education within the 2-year period preceding the renewal date. No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period for online or electronic media. 

  • NEW REQUIREMENT: A new rule was added to the Public Health Code – General Rules in 2021. It makes training on Implicit Bias a condition for initial licensure or registration as well as license or registration renewal. Licensees must complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. For initial renewal after June 1, 2021, licensees will only need 1 hour for each year since the rule’s promulgation date of June 1, 2021. 
  • At least 2 of the 25 required hours must be in pain and pain symptom management
  • Beginning with the March 31, 2018 renewal cycle and all renewal cycles thereafter, licensees must have completed a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking that meets the standards established in Administrative Rule 338.10105  
  • Beginning January 6, 2022, individuals seeking initial licensure in Michigan must have completed Human Trafficking Training prior to obtaining a nursing license. The Human Trafficking Training is a one-time training and is not part of the continuing education requirement but may be satisfied via a continuing education activity. 

What do I need to renew my RN license in Michigan?

What do I need to renew my APRN license in Michigan? 

Michigan nurses are required to complete 25 hours of continuing education hours. These CE hours must be approved by the Board during the 2 years preceding an application for renewal or relicensure. A licensee may earn 25 hours of continuing education for obtaining specialty certification or maintaining certification as a:

  • Clinical nurse specialist
  • Nurse midwife
  • Nurse anesthetist
  • Nurse practitioner

No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period for online or electronic media.

NEW! DEA MATE Act requirements for Michigan APRNs  

All DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM) must complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
