Description

Vestibular Dysfunction puts individuals at a 12x-increased risk for falls and are often costly and traumatic indicators of dysfunction that could be successfully controlled with patient-specific interventions. Statistics show that over 90 million Americans experience balance or dizziness problems. Due to the baby boomers reaching the “geriatric” population, a large percentage of therapists are shifting their skill sets to properly care for aging adults. Over the last few years, there has been enormous growth in new assessment tools and research studies leading to more effective treatments. Being able to correctly diagnose and treat these types of problems can be difficult and requires knowledge and training in evidence-based assessment and diagnostic techniques, treatment strategies, and outcome assessments.

This up-to-date course uses evidenced-based, hands-on teaching methods to help therapists recognize and navigate the evaluation and treatment of the “dizzy patient.” Participants will be able to identify and treat patients with a number of diagnoses including Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Labyrinthitis and Neuritis, motion sensitivity, and more. Guided by hands-on labs and case studies, you will gain current concepts in treating patients with vestibular dysfunction using low and high-tech treatment strategies as well as individualized therapeutic exercises. After attending this course, you will return to your patients with specific interventions for immediately improving the vestibular system, decreasing the risk of falls and greatly reducing balance related issues.

Objectives

  1. Discuss the prevalence of dizziness/vertigo in the geriatric and general population, as well as the importance of fall risk assessment.
  2. Identify the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system and how it can cause dysfunction.
  3. Implement the best available assessment tools to examine the vestibular system, oculomotor function, fall risk, and static/dynamic balance.
  4. Develop treatment plans to help improve balance and dizziness/vertigo in the older adult and general population.
  5. Discuss and troubleshoot common issues related to exercise prescription in the geriatric population.
  6. Use evidenced-based outcome assessment tools to strengthen documentation, bill correctly, and progress patients throughout care.

Instructor

Corey Podbielski, DPT, CSCS, Cert. DN, TPI Certified, is a distinguished clinician and speaker who brings a wealth of experience to his high-impact seminars. Dr. Podbielski is the Clinical Director at Spectrum Physical Therapy in Niantic, CT, where he specializes in the evaluation, assessment, and treatment of Vestibular Disorders. He graduated from Springfield College in Massachusetts with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, as well as a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Science with a Minor in Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. His philosophy of treatment is based on high-level manual therapy, functional exercise, and evidence-based practice. Dr. Podbielski is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Corey played college hockey and continues to play Pro/Am hockey today.
