FC Barcelona to be Part of Ground-Breaking Sleep Study

World-famous soccer club partners with Allianz

FC Barcelona announced its intentions to have players at all levels of the club engage in a study that will analyze the link between sleep and quality athletic performance.

The study is the first project in a series of efforts between the club and longtime partner Allianz SE, a leading global insurance provider. The duo hopes to embark upon a number of evaluations designed to impact the health and wellbeing of the club’s athletes, and in time, that of the general population.

This first study will document the sleep experiences of FC Barcelona athletes through personalised studies and records. The objective is to measure the possible impact sleep has on their performance and health.

The study, which will last approximately six months, will collect qualitative sleep data of 600 young athletes from different sections of the Club. 50 athletes will be chosen for individualized, deeper investigations (there was no indication how those athletes would be selected.)

All study-related activities will take place with the help of Hexoskin, a Canadian startup specializing in cutting-edge, smart technology clothing. Adsalutem Institute, which specializes in sleep medicine, will oversee the project, which is based on the fact that sleep is essential for health and wellbeing, and has an important impact on healthy physical development, emotional regulation, cognitive performance and quality of life. As such, Adsalutem institute enters the project with a working theory that improved sleep will lead to improved performance on the field.
