Renewal requirements for Georgia cosmetology licenses

The Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers requires all salon professionals to complete five (5) continuing education (CE) hours from an approved CE provider by their education renewal date. Three (3) of the five hours must be met by a course on health and safety, or another equivalent course approved by the Board.

Note that paper renewals are NOT automatically mailed to licensees. If you would like to request a paper renewal form, you can contact the Georgia State Board at (404) 424-9966.

The Professional Licensing Board Division opens the official renewal period for Georgia cosmetologists, hairdressers, and hairstylists. Licensees can renew their Georgia cosmetology license directly on the Board’s website. If you do not already have an account on the site, you will need to set one up now.

Once you sign in, click on the License Renewal icon and follow the instructions. A series of questions will pop up, covering topics like:

  • Whether or not you have received a conviction or board sanction since the last renewal
  • Whether or not you have completed your continuing education requirements
  • Whether or not you are a U.S. citizen

What if I’ve received a conviction or a board sanction since the last renewal?

Answering ‘yes’ to this question does not automatically disqualify you from practicing in Georgia. However, in such cases, there are several additional steps you must follow to renew your Georgia cosmetology license. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime must submit the following documents to the Board:

  1. A copy of conviction/sentencing documents from the Court before which you were convicted and sentenced, signed by the presiding judge, and showing said conviction and sentence
  2. If applicable, a statement on official letterhead from your probation or parole officer regarding your status/completion of any probation/parole.

Individuals with Board sanctions must request that the licensing board or agency send a certified copy of the action taken against your license, plus any relevant supporting documents, to the Board’s office.

Where can I complete my CE hours?
