Healthcare is hard. The demanding nature of a nurse’s work—long shifts, high stress, and irregular schedules—can take a toll on your mind and body. Nursing demands boundless compassion, resilience, and dedication, and nurses are not immune to the mental health challenges that arise from their work. The emotional burden of caring for others often creates a perfect storm that can lead to burnout and compassion fatigue.

Burnout and compassion fatigue don’t discriminate. They can seep into every aspect of life, casting a shadow over your well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. However, with proper support, self-care, resilience, and mental health awareness, nurses like you can overcome these obstacles and continue to provide high-quality care to your patients.

Caring for yourself in times of stress

Remember, your well-being is just as important as the care you provide for others. In times of failure or distress on the job, it’s not always easy to show self-compassion, but it is important. Here are some tips to help practice kindness and understanding in those difficult times.

  • Tip 1: Practice “detached concern.” Somewhere between depersonalization and emotional overload is the mindset of detached concern. Empathy is good, but there is a point beyond which it can get overwhelming. Know when to hit the “off switch.”
  • Tip 2: Positive self-talk. Everyone has an inner voice, and it’s not always positive. Self-compassion means softening that inner voice and curbing self-criticism.
  • Tip 3: Try self-compassion affirmations. Replacing negative self-talk with positive self-talk can be a powerful tool. Try simple statements like, “I’m doing my best every day,” or “My mistakes show that I’m learning and growing.”
