Career Step, an online school offering career-focused education, has published a new infographic on “Why You Should Consider a Career in Medical Coding and Billing.” The infographic details the demand for coding professionals, upcoming industry changes, and what to look for in a quality medical coding training program. The infographic comes on the heels of Career Step’s new Professional Medical Coding and Billing program released last week.
“With all of the changes anticipated in the medical coding industry over the next year, many employers and industry experts are expressing their concern over the significant shortage of coding professionals, a shortage that will only increase.” said Jerolyn Carter, Career Step vice president of Academics. “This is a great time to prepare for a medical coding career with the industry in transition. With the right training, you can be well-prepared to help employers make the October 1, 2014 mandated transition to the ICD-10 code set.”
The “Why You Should Consider a Career in Medical Coding and Billing” infographic provides information on the current state of the industry, such as the fact that only 49% of employers currently report adequate medical coder staff levels. In addition, the increased demand expected with the transition from the ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets, will increase the coder shortage to at least 53% nationwide. Those interested in the career will also find information on the steps necessary to become a coder and what they should look for in a good training program.
“Medical coding and billing is an excellent career choice given that there is a high demand for well-trained professionals in the coding field which you can train for in a year or less,” said Ryan Ewer, Career Step vice president of Enrollments and Marketing. “We’re very excited about our new infographic because it makes it easy to recognize the phenomenal opportunities available in this field and help individuals who are looking to quickly change their career prospects.”
